Why "The Starting Point"?

Whether you're going somewhere literally or figuratively, there is – with good reason – a lot of emphasis on the end point.

A successful journey also knows where it's coming from. Understanding both points will encourage a stronger connection between them. It might even reveal some new points along the way.

I also like what a starting point suggests: if we start here, we can go anywhere. It's an open-ended outlook – and it's entirely consistent with effective public transit.

My Philosophy

I call on these time-tested strategies before, during and after any project:

Scale. Know when to think big and when to get in the weeds. The path to the vision runs through the details.

Immerse. Each transit system operates in a unique environment. Dive into the local factors that make each project a fresh challenge.

Listen. Ask about the situation from diverse angles. Understand the questions before proposing "the" answers.

Integrate. Be mindful of what happens before and after any one task. Thread a single, versatile solution through multiple facets of implementation.

Learn. An imperfect project highlights where to improve. A slam dunk offers positive reinforcement. Either way, learn what works and what doesn't.

Succeed. Success is a very different outcome than merely "not failing." Pursue decisive, meaningful wins that stimulate further forward movement.

Act! There is always opportunity to do something. Whether conditions are constrained or ideal, take action however possible. Every step counts.

NG on bus

This is fun!

I rarely publish photos of myself and I don't have many of them. Ultimately, I decided to include this pic. It's a pretty honest portrayal of how I roll.

I am riding the 40 bus downtown, en route to update executive staff on ridership stats and daily performance. The binder contains materials to show trends, challenges and breakthroughs.

I am smiling unapologetically. I like what I do. I take it seriously – and I have fun while I do it.

Transit is exciting, energetic, indispensable, complex, personal, misunderstood – and it's always in motion. I am forever appreciating these inherently awesome traits of our work. Not every profession makes it so fun or so rewarding.

Sometimes, all it takes is a quick bus or train ride to remind ourselves why we do what we do.

(Oh, and of course, I acknowledge the many ways to be a valuable contributor. My coworker – a dedicated professional in her own right – demonstrates another valid use of 20 minutes on the bus.   see the full pic >> )

This website references actual projects that I have actually worked on. My connection to each project may be or may have been as an advisor/consultant, an employee of a transit industry vendor or a direct employee of a transit agency. Projects featured are intended as examples of my work and my capabilities; I do not claim ownership of any project delivered by any vendor or produced for any agency. Thanks :)
