It's more than just running buses in circles. Though if we're good, we make it look that easy.
Example Projects
Examples below represent just a few of the Operations projects that I've been involved with. Each graphic + description gives a quick snapshot of an actual project that, in almost every case, generated countless other materials. Please contact me if you'd like to discuss a project in greater detail...
At The Wheel
I piloted full-size transit buses at a heavily-used system; I also trained new operators. The experience afforded me a critical window into operations from the front lines. I achieved an excellent safety record and earned numerous customer compliments.
In The Details
Consistency translates to safety, reliability and ease-of-use. In collaboration with drivers and supervisors, I developed detailed operating schemes that all could follow.
React, Proact
Field conditions often require reactive management. I worked with dispatch staff to analyze incidents and responses. The result was effective proactive measures that enabled quicker resolution.
Please Standby
With a well-positioned standby vehicle, operational issues don't become the customer's problem. I've set up standby schemes to plug unforeseen holes in the schedule. Published service continues without missing a beat.
My Approach
That whole "running buses in circles" thing... it's not unusual to hear digs like that. Such dismissive comments used to make me wince. Today, they make me smile: if it indeed looks so easy, that's because we have operations down pat. You're welcome!
Yes, common functions from other industries do show up in transit operations: vehicle dispatch, staff management, customer service. It's the intersections and overlaps of these simple cycles where transit becomes its own thing. That's where I find the most opportunity for constant improvement.
In ways not comparable to any other product or service, transit affects countless people, in thousands of places, at every minute. Operationally, it's not practical to exert strict, direct control over every little moving part. With that in mind, I strive toward a culture of operations: methods that are thorough enough to meet daily rigors... agile enough to expect the unexpected... trusting enough to inspire good employees to use good judgment in challenging situations.
Here We Start... Here we go!

This website references actual projects that I have actually worked on. My connection to each project may be or may have been as an advisor/consultant, an employee of a transit industry vendor or a direct employee of a transit agency. Projects featured are intended as examples of my work and my capabilities; I do not claim ownership of any project delivered by any vendor or produced for any agency. Thanks :)
