I'm Neil. I really like public transit. And – look at that – it's my profession!
I work with public transit agencies on a variety of projects. I focus on technical elements that add up to a successful experience for the transit customer.
I can assist you with implementation: moving ideas from the drawing board to everyday features of the system.
Transit is a vital part of our communities – and we're at a critical moment. With a thoughtful mix of inputs, we can open an exciting, positive future for transit systems and the people who interface with them.

Several of my contributions – representing multiple skillsets – come together on this bus:
Scheduling
Trips, blocks, runs and rosters are the backbone of any transit service. From quick resource estimates to street-ready bid packages, I work at every dimension of the scheduling process.
Service Design
We have a diverse toolkit to connect the dots: fixed routes, flexible zones, vehicles of all shapes and sizes. I align these ingredients to create effective, inclusive transit services.
Operations
Even the best designed service will always contend with road closures, staffing volatility and equipment issues. I lay out robust, realistic field methods that stand up to the curveballs.
Mapping & Info Design
To the unfamiliar, transit can appear daunting – a single trip involves dozens of whats, wheres and whens. With custom-drawn maps and clean designs, I help to lower the barrier of entry.
Branding & Identity
Transit is more than a public service – it's a highly visible civic asset. I mix retail-style marketing with eye-catching service info to make transit proud, bright and appealing.
Education
Countless behind-the-scenes tasks go in to running an effective transit system. Through engaging, audience-tailored activities, I help stakeholders to understand the hidden details.
Let's Do This
How I Work
I am an independent, individually employed transit professional.
I'll answer to the term consultant – though I approach each project with the long-term interest of an in-house team member. It's a legacy of my formative experiences as an agency employee.
Today, my ideal arrangement is a direct relationship with each client. From the agency standpoint, it usually casts me as a "1099" – subject, of course, to any applicable procurement standards.
Some agencies have brought me on as a part-time, term-limited employee for a specific project. In certain cases, I can work as a sub to a larger consulting firm.
Generally, I engage with two or three transit agencies at a time. This volume allows me to be agile, responsive and fully tuned in to every project.
Still, I rarely turn down a chance to help improve a transit system. If you have an initiative in mind, let's talk – we will figure out a way to get it moving!
Beyond the Specialties
My specialties are only a few pieces of the puzzle – and I am always on the prowl to learn more. Over the course of honing my core strengths, I have also cultivated a working knowledge of these functions:
Find Me Here!
Whether working independently, with a team or for an agency, I've taken on major projects – of various genres – in these locations:
I've also participated in smaller projects in cities ranging from Daytona Beach to Redondo Beach, Portsmouth to Porterville.
It's a tremendous honor to work in so many places. Wherever I go, I aspire to learn local customs, favorite spots, proper pronunciations – and, certainly, how the transit system connects it all.
I have worked with systems of all sizes: one-bus experimental services... right on up to the second-largest transit agency in the US. I've found an especially good fit with mid-size agencies that "lean large." That is, systems with 50 to 250 vehicles – and a motivation to grow.
Transit Multimedia
Every transit customer, every transit destination and every transit route has a story to tell. Sometimes it's a message about transit service itself; more often, it's a real-life vignette where transit plays a supporting role. I use photo, video, illustration and music to document these little occasions. See More >>

This website references actual projects that I have actually worked on. My connection to each project may be or may have been as an advisor/consultant, an employee of a transit industry vendor or a direct employee of a transit agency. Projects featured are intended as examples of my work and my capabilities; I do not claim ownership of any project delivered by any vendor or produced for any agency. Thanks :)
